Although there are many tips you’ll receive during pregnancy and shortly after your baby is born, there are some that will have you going mad if you try them. There are age old classic sayings that just don’t seem to always work to the mama’s advantage and only end up frustrating parents in general. In the end, it’s best to find the things that work best for your baby and you and gain some sanity back quicker.
Before the delivery, every mother will hear the phrase, ‘Sleep when the baby sleeps’. This is quite a tease, especially for mothers of multiple children or multiple babies. There is usually never a moment of silence in a house full of kids and if there is, you know it might not be good! The baby also may not be a good sleeper because of things that are out of your control such as acid reflux, gas, colic, food sensitivities, and other things. In these cases, you just really want to just take it easy when the baby is napping. So, for the first few weeks just be sure to take it easy on your feet.
Another common piece of advice is to take long, warm showers (a remedy for multiple postpartum issues). This is another tip that can easily frustrate mothers because most of the time, you don’t have that time. The time it takes for a new mother to shower and take care of herself and get dressed is unfathomable. Most of the time you are rushing because the baby needs to nurse or just needs its mama to calm it down. It is an unrealistic expectation to think that you will have the luxury to take a long, hot shower for a few weeks after the birth.
So, when you become a new mama, be sure to try things that work best for you and the baby. If you have a partner talk about ways they can help when you have hit ridiculous exhaustion. Call a friend or a family member if you are so lucky, and ask them to come hold the baby while you get a shower. Perhaps the best piece of advice is never be afraid to ask for help. There is always someone willing to lend a hand when a new baby is born.
